Learn how to find out which version of software is installed on your iPod. You can determine this by navigating to the the About screen or by connecting iPod to your computer and using iTunes or iPod Updater.

Some customers may notice the following alert message when trying to update or restore an iPod in iTunes 7 or later: iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the Internet. Make sure your Internet connection is active and try again. Internet access is required to download iPod software updates. However, if you are able to connect to the Internet with Internet Explorer and can also access the iTunes Store, see the solution below to resolve this issue.

If you have a Fifth Generation iPod, you can use iTunes to add or sync videos to your iPod just like you do with your music. Videos can be synced automatically or manually.

Learn how to safely disconnect iPod if it still displays the "Do not disconnect" message after you eject it from the computer. iTunes has the ability to sync your contacts and calendars from Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express and contacts from Microsoft Address Book to any iPod with a display screen1 (Note: Outlook 2003 or later is required to sync contacts and calendars from Outlook).

Sleep When not playing music, iPod sleeps after a few minutes of inactivity. Sleep is the same as if you turned iPod off by pressing the Play/Pause button for a few seconds. To wake iPod from sleep, press any button and the iPod will wake quickly to the menu. By falling into sleep, iPod goes into a power conservation mode but can wake quickly. If iPod sleeps while powered, the charging status appears on the screen. When iPod is not powered and sleeps, the screen is blank.

iPod, iPod nano, and iPod mini can be restored to work with Macintosh or Microsoft Windows computers. If configured for a Mac, the iPod will be restored as Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus). If configured for Windows, the iPod will be restored as FAT32.

This document explains the "Enable disk use" option in iTunes and under what conditions it is dimmed or enabled, and how to disable it. The "Enable disk use" option in the iPod preferences in iTunes is enabled, but the text and checkbox are dimmed and you cannot disable the option. When the "Manually manage songs and playlists" option is enabled, the iPod is in "manual" mode. In this mode, "Enable disk use" is always enabled or turned on. This is a feature of manual mode. To disable the "Enable disk use" option, select either "Automatically update all songs and playlists" or "Automatically update

Some customers may experience an issue where iTunes 7 or later displays the following message on a Windows PC: "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore"

When you plug your iPod into a power source, the charging icon appears—it's a lightning bolt over a battery. If the battery is fully discharged, you won't see an animated icon. Instead, you'll see the icon pictured below (even on a color screen). The icon indicates the battery is charging successfully, but it doesn't have enough charge to power up. When connecting an iPod with a fully discharged battery, it may take up to 30 minutes for iPod to have enough charge to turn on and be recognized by the computer and iTunes.

If you use an iPod with a Click Wheel — including iPod mini, iPod (Click Wheel), iPod photo, iPod with color display, iPod nano, and Fifth Generation iPod (iPod with video) — you may have the wrong software if you see a folder with an exclamation point. This can happen after configuring the iPod for the first time on a Windows PC without installing the included software first.

In iTunes on Windows XP, when changing the selected program to sync contacts with between Outlook and Windows Address Book, iTunes will prompt to merge or replace the contacts on the iPod touch or iPhone.
